Artist Hero Series Box with Removeable Brooch - Lee BONTECOU
I first encountered Lee’s work at the Museum of Modern Art in New York in the late 70’s and was immeasurably intrigued by her sculptural forms which were fabricated wire structures which proved that she was a great welder, brazer and in general an amazing wire diva. She then covered these forms with canvas and other materials that is meticulously cut to form then stitched and wire wrapped in place. I just found this mix of materials and to techniques to be immensely informative and inspiring.
What I learned from her in essence was that I could create defined sculptural spaces using wire as the primary material and I’ve been doing just that ever since.
Recently, as I was describing my love of her work to a friend from New York, who is an art transporter guy. He told me how he had been to her studio in Pennsylvania a number of times to pickup her work for delivery to galleries and museum and found her to be a lovely person to boot.
